PhonemicAwareness

  • Based on individual sounds of words
  • Have this skill when can think about, utilize, and notice the sounds
  • This is the beginning because it helps with speech and leads to ability to learn literacy
  • Helps with reading and spelling

Phonics

  • Teaches/exemplifies relationship between written and spoken language
  • Teaching phonics helps students learn the relationships
  • Should begin in kindergarten/first grade
  • Helps with spelling, reading, and word recognition

Fluency

  • A student has fluency when they can read fluently and quickly
  • Is important so students can understand text
  • Oral reading helps develop fluency

Vocabulary

  • Two kinds - oral & reading
  • Oral vocabulary are words we use to communicate by speaking and recognize when we listen
  • Reading vocabulary words are words we recognize and use in print/writing
  • Understanding the definition of words is important so that students understand what they are reading
  • Oral vocabulary helps develop reading vocabulary

Text Comprehension

  • Is understanding what you read
  • To help students develop this must teach different comprehensive strategies
  • A couple strategies include asking questions about the text, creating summaries, and making predictions about what comes next in text
