The Big 5 are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Phonemic Awareness

The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds and words.

Phonemic Awarness

  • Focuses on the auditory part of reading
  • Emphasizes that words are broken up into sounds and sounds are put together to make words
  • Examples: Rhyming, Syllables, Blending

Phonics

The connections between letters and sounds.

Phonics

  • Working with printed letters and words
  • Sounding out of words
  • Helps to build fluency in reading individual words.
  • Examples: Sight Words, CVC Words

Fluency

Reading with speed, accuracy, and prosody.

Fluency

  • Students can read sentences easily and do not have to sound out each word
  • Being able to read at a conversational speed
  • Examples: Reading to Self, Partnered Reading

Comprehension

Understanding what you listen to and read.

Comprehension

  • Listening Comprehension is the understanding of spoken instructions or readings.
  • Reading Comprehension is the understanding of text read by the student themselves.
  • Comprehension Skills: Predicting, Analyzing, Summarizing, and Inferring.

Vocabulary

Understanding, defining, and using new words.

  • Knowing more words helps build fluency and comprehension.
  • Helps students to determine tone and deeper meanings
  • Self discovery by using context clues and root words
