Phonemic Awareness

  • " ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words"
  • Is a subcategory of phonological awareness
  • Is a skill that can be learned or taught
  • There are many ways to teach it, but try and focus the instruction
  • Phonemic awareness helps kids read, write, and helps phonics instruction

Phonics Instruction

  • It is the understanding of the relationship between letters
  • Helps kids understadn the realtionhisp between written and spoken words
  • Helps us remember how to spell irregular words
  • Instruction needs to be explicit and sytematic
  • Instruction should begin in Kindergarten

Fluency Instruction

  • Process of quick, accurate reading
  • Is important in comprehension, and word recongnition
  • Takes time and practice to devlop
  • Repeated reading is proven to help fluency
  • Modeling is important for students
  • Monitioring is a useful tool

Vocabulary Instruction

  • Using words you know to understand words you do not
  • Some vocab must be taught directly
  • You can help students learn both indirectly and directly
  • Focus on important/useful/difficult words, not ALL unknown words

Text Comprehension Instruction

  • Ensuring students are understading what they are reading
  • There are six strategies proven to help comprehension
  • Is a skill that needs to be emphasized in the beginning stages of reading
  • Readers think will reading, and they read for a purpose
