Literary characters on apollo 13

Published on Nov 19, 2015

For an English project, our group had to choose a character per person in the group from any literary work. In order to gain deeper understanding of the character's thoughts, personality and vernacular, we placed them in the 1970 Apollo 13 successful failure to see how they would react in emergencies.

The Apollo 13 spacecraft launched on April 17 of 1970.The crew on Apollo 13 was supposed to land on the moon. Sadly, the space craft began to expirience problems. It took the crew seven days to return to Earth.

Now, many years later, historians have found diary entries, narratives and blogs written by the four astrounauts aboard the Apollo 13 during the hours of tension and uncertanity.

April 11,1970. Space Launch: Augustus Waters

“3..2..1..liftoff!” is what I hear from mission control seconds after getting inside the space ship. Today has been great. Who would've known that I, Augustus Waters, would be going off in the Apollo 13 to the moon. I must be the first person to go into space with only one leg. Now that's got to count as making a mark.
I looked to my left and see one of my partners, Hazel Grace, and give her a quick smile. Although she might had not noticed that I saw her whispering to herself nervously “Just a really fast elevator” I was in charge to make sure the oxygen tanks were good. I did my job and our flight was a go.

April 12, 1970. Travel time on the spacecraft: Hazel Grace
I brought a journal with me to space. It has pages filled with a list of things I want to do before cancer allies with its forces to beat me. One of the pages was for things I wanna do in space. First on the list was "I want to fly around in the spacecraft." I couldn't do so if I had to carry an oxygen tank all the time. I maneuvered my way around the spacecraft to find someone who could help me out. I found a guy named Augustus, who also had cancer, I heard. Well, used to have cancer.

I had one of those moments where you just stare with a smile. I snapped out of it and said, "Uhm Augustus, see I have these goals I want to achieve in space. One of them is to fly, and I can't do that with one arm." He eyeballed my other hand holding the oxygen tank. "You want me to follow you around carrying your oxygen tank as you wobble on about the spacecraft?" He said, popping a smile. "Yes," I replied. "I'm actually kind of..." He stopped. "Oh what the heck, let's go!" he said.

April 13, 1970. Travel time: Sherlock Holmes

I have been forced, against my will, to host a broadcast of outer space life to the world.

Me: “This is the food. We keep liquids and solids in bags and make sure to take them at the appropriate times.”
Me: “This controls waste deposits. When we go to the restroom and can not store our waste, we release it into space.”

Me:“This is a waste of time. We both know that no one is watching this.”
When Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the moon, the Americans beat the Russians in the space race. Now, space travel has lost it's initial lust and wonder. Now, this live broadcast was most likely not being watched and will be for naught.
I am fed up being on this ship. It’s in the middle of no where. I hate how we have to contact Mission Control and update them on the number of the valves, the pressures, the computer status.
Augustus claims that the universe is a mystery sadly, it’s just not the type of mystery I like.

April 13,1970. Seeing Earth: Augusts Waters

Today I got to see Earth from outer space.
“Take a look and you can see Earth” I hear mission control say as I woke up from my nap. Wow is all I can say. Its so beautiful, I never thought about living a life this meaningful. Now, from way up here, I know I’ve lived it meaningful enough. I took a glance to my mates and saw how emotional they also felt at that moment. The only thing that shook my mind away that moment was when I took a look at Sherlock and knew he was thinking. Thinking too hard. I shook my mind a bit and proudly said “Everything is just beautiful right now.”

April 14, 1970. Reporting There’s a Problem: Annabeth Chase

I woke up when I heard the alarms blaring. I looked over at Sherlock and saw him wake up with a start also. “The oxygen in the tank is decreasing!”, yelled Augustus. Hazel’s eyes held so much fear, but she still managed to help him. “Grab the control panels! Hazel, cool the engine down! Everyone stay safe!”, cried Sherlock. I soon realized that the oxygen was running low. “Houston, we have a problem”, cried Hazel.

April 14, 1970.Mission Control: Sherlock Holmes

Well into the day, the spaceship begins to shake, disturbing me from my thoughts. Judging from Annabeth’s face, I can tell that this is not supposed to be happening.
Annabeth is at the controls, checking the levels of oxygen and power.
Annabeth: “Houston . There is lots of pressure activity.”
The main alarm begins to sound.
Me: “What happened?”
Augustus: “Mission Control told me to stir the oxygen tanks. When I did, the ship began to shake.”
I nod. Everyone has their headsets on now. Hazel and Augustus are on alert.

I look out the window. There is something, some gas, coming out of the spacecraft.
Me: “We are venting something out into space. A gas of some sort. Has to be oxygen.”
Mission Control: “Roger.”
I slam my fist on the window.
Hazel: “Don’t give up on us, Holmes. Let’s work the problem.”

April 16, 1970. Return Trip to Earth: Annabeth Chase.

I looked at the oxygen tank and prayed that we had enough to get back to earth. Every time I glanced at it, It always seems to be decreasing. Maybe its just my imagination, because when you're freaking out about a life or death situation then you start going crazy. Hazel must have noticed my frustration because she came over to talk to me. “Its alright you know”, she said sympathetically ,”we’ll make it back, Augustus and Sherlock know exactly what they're doing”.How could she be so calm through all the chaos? I mean we could crash anytime from now, but she still has that tired yet warming smile on her face. I wonder if thats how all cancerous patients are. Even in the most dire situations, they’ll still be happy. I smiled a rueful smile. She gave me a hug and I held on for sometime because I realized what I needed was comfort.
