Sometimes the foil forces us to think about what would have happened if a character had made different choices.

The foil exists to deepen our understanding of the characters and themes of the novel.

For example, in The Giver, Asher is a foil for Jonas.

Asher is playful to highlight Jonas's seriousness. Asher is physical to highlight Jonas's thoughtful nature.

Who was the foil for the mistress in Chains?
