FINANCIAL PROBLEMS/WORK

  • At the age of 15, my family was struggling financially, and I was forced to leave school and go to work
  • I got a job at my Uncle Cornelis' art dealership, Goupil & Cie., a firm of art dealers in The Hague
  • By this time, I was fluent in French, German, English, and Dutch

INTEREST IN ART

  • In June of 1873, I was transferred to the Groupil Gallery in London
  • I was mystified by the English culture
