FAMILIES IN POVERTY

  • Workhouse inmates increased by 151% in 5 years
  • Poorhouses and workhouses were designed to be harsh to discourage poverty
  • Families were separated in poorhouses
  • Government created prison-like houses and work spaces for the poor.

DIRTY

  • Working class neighborhoods were crowded and polluted
  • Quarters that were once neat are now full of filth and misery
  • Dirty water pumps caused 10,000 deaths in 3 months (Cholera)
  • Quality of life took a sharp downturn
  • Poor sanitation caused lower life expectancy and poor public health
