Define the issue...
In simple terms, lifestyle perspective misunderstanding between parents and teenagers is the difference in perspective between parents and teenagers when it comes to lifestyle. For example, teenagers care about friends while parents care about family and safety. ​

Parents think...

  • We are experienced; They are inexperienced​
  • We want responsibility; They want freedom
  • We value what is lasting; They value what is latest

Parents think...

  • We care about safety; They care about adventure
  • We give them support; They give us worry
  • We make money; They make demands

Teenagers think...

  • We are held back; They are overprotective
  • We want privacy; They want to know
  • We value what's new; They value what's old
  • We care about friends; They care about grades
  • We give answers; They give questions

Teenagers think...

  • We make effort; They make the rules

Age Gap -- difference in age between people


Generation Gap -- difference in times & worlds in which we are born

Causes of our Issue

  • Difference in perspective
  • Difference in age & generation
  • Difference in experience level

Background Study

Misunderstanding happens because people think differently and our issue, lifestyle perspective misunderstanding focuses on the misunderstanding between parents and teenagers. Often, teenagers care about fun and friends, the present, while parents care about education, the future. Also, generation and age gap causes misunderstandings between them. And lastly, their experiences separate them from one another. Often, parents are more experienced than teenagers. Thus, they're wiser.

Possible Solutions for our Issue

  • Choose the right time to discuss a problem​
  • Listen carefully to what the other person is saying​
  • Give the other person time to explain what the issue is or how they are feeling​
  • Pay full attention​
  • Re-state what the other person has said, to show them you have understood them correctly​
