LLAMAS

THE FLUFFY HERBIVORES OF SOUTH AMERICA

SCIENTIFIC NAME

  • Llama glama
  • Lama- Peruvian word
  • Used for animals in the camel family

DESCRIPTION

  • Horselike
  • Wooly, fluffy coat
  • Varying in shade of coat
  • 5-6 feet tall
  • 300- 450 pounds

LIFE

  • Lives about 20 years
  • Usually only 1 llama baby
  • Pregnancy- 350 days
  • Babies- weigh10kg
  • Are nursed for 4 months

HABITAT

  • Native to:
  • Western South America,
  • Bolivia, Peru, and Chile
  • Lives in mountain areas
  • Global population

DIET

  • Herbivore with 3 stomachs
  • Eats leaves, roots, seeds, nuts, sap, etc.
  • Drinks 2-3 gallons of water
  • Eat up to 1.8% of body weight in grass/ hay
  • Get moisture from food

LLAMA BEHAVIOR

  • Live in groups of up to 20
  • Has 6 breeding females and babies
  • Led by male llama
  • Keeps position by having dominance fights
  • Defeat stance- lying sideways, neck down, tail up

LLAMA DEFENSE

  • Use "bathrooms" to mark territory
  • Use vocal calls to warn the pack of danger
  • Aggressive if provoked
  • Kick, charge, spit, and bite predators

LLAMA WOOL

  • Thick and course
  • Very valuable
  • Sheared every 2 years
  • Producing 3 kg of fleece

LLAMA IMPORTANCE

  • Used as "guard llamas" for flocks
  • Used as golf caddies/ farmyard pets
  • Used to haul burdens over Andean mountains
  • Can carry loads up to 60kg for 30 km/day
  • Llamas create no negative effect on human economy

  • Not endangered
  • 3 million llamas worldwide
  • 70% of llamas in Bolivia
