Names for the Longlure Frogfish

  • Common Name: The Longlure Frogfish
  • Scientific name: Antennarius multiocellatus

Physical Appearance

  • has Pectoral fins that allows it to walk on the ocean floor
  • has a giant mouth that can grow up to 12 times its resting size
  • small(1 inch to 15 inches)
  • Colors are variable

Physical Adaptations

  • Has a lure that acts like bait that lures prey, and this helps the Longlure Frogfish catch prey
  • Pectoral fins help it move to a different location if fish aren’t taking the bait

Behavioral Adaptations

  • Lie-in wait predators, this allows the frogfish to surprise its prey
  • “yawns” to scare off predators ,and this helps the frogfish protect itself

Interesting Facts

  • Can catch prey in ⅙ of a second
  • one of the fastest animals alive(because of how fast they catch their prey)
  • Whatever their color, there are always black spots on them
  • Only high speed cameras can catch them feeding on their prey
  • Frogfish are cannibalistic

  • Fishers squirt Sodium Cyanide into the water to stun fish
  • This began in the 1960s to supply international aquarium trade.Since the 1980s
  • fishers have been supplying live reef fish for restaurants
  • This has been poisoning the coral where Frogfish live in
