What Do Children need?

  • To be loved and give love
  • To feel special
  • To feel valuable
  • To feel powerful
  • To experiment and explore

Misbehavior is communication

Your child is telling you she has a need in the only way she knows.

The Mistaken Goals

GEM

Genuine Encounter Moment

To give a GEM:

  • Get on eye level
  • Touch gently and lovingly
  • Be curious and LISTEN
  • Follow the child's lead
  • Keep it a heart connection

To Redirect Mistaken Goal of Attention:

  • Make No Eye Contact
  • Say Nothing
  • Nonverbally Make the Child Feel Loved
  • Act Immediately!

Keys to success

  • Give every child at least one GEM a day
  • Keep a positive balance in emotional bank accounts
  • Invest GEMS on the front end
  • Make agreements ahead of time
  • Be sensitive to a child's needs and abilities
