PRESENTATION OUTLINE
A new way of doing research... This chapter focuses on a cultural approach as a new way of doing research and improving practice in online learning, explore key research areas, discuss implications for instructional design & support, and conclude with a set of key messages from the book
I find it interesting that there are 4 approaches or 4 types of research for people who want to use cultural approach in their online learning
Research Types
- Explanatory
- Design-Based
- Cross-Cultural
- Exploratory
My favorite type of research is Cross-cultural research. Overall it is the way that one assumes the culture would be the same across the board when conducting online learning
The next research method I find interesting would be exploratory research, finding the what, why, and how something is happening
Since cultural is evolving especially in the online environment it is important to keep up with knowing why certain things happen in your environment and how culture will/is effecting them
Gathering and interpreting data
I never realized that one of the greatest challenges conducting research on culture would be describing the participants. Most times they are bulked together by familiarity, thus learning categorizing by ethnic information is not the best way to get a better understanding of how people define themselves. More qualitative methods are needed for a mores success data gathering
Overall Chapter 17 is a review of the elements we have learned since we first read chapter 1; Providing a breakdown of reiteration along with key takeaways from the book
"We need instructional design models that can help instructional designers and instructors strategically integrate cultural differences of both learners and teachers in designing and supporting online learning"
I think that is a crucial and detrimental part of global learning
