GOOD VS EVIL

THERE ARE CLEAR LINES OF GOOD AND EVIL IN BOTH MOVIES. FOR EXAMPLE SAURON AND VOLDEMORT ARE BOTH THE EVIL RULERS.

GOOD VS. EVIL CONTINUED

  • Orcs, goblins, and Nazguls make the evil army for Lord of the Rings
  • Death Eaters, Trolls and Giants made the evil army in Harry Potter
  • The main characters have a group of close friends
  • Both movies have explicit dark lords who rule the world
  • Bad characters wear black and good characters wear brown or other colors

POWER

BOTH MOVIES HAVE AN EXTREMELY POWERFUL ITEM THAT WILL CHANGE THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE

POWER CONTINUED

  • The Elder wand: in the right hands this wand could be a complete game changer in the Wizarding war
  • The Ring: Frodo was shown what would happen if Sauron got the Ring: The world would turn black.
  • Both of the protagonists had to prevent the evil warlord from getting this item

SACRIFICES FROM THE PROTAGONIST

BOTH HARRY AND FRODO HAD TO GO TO EXTREME MEASURES TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR WORLD

SACRIFICES CONTINUED

  • Frodo gave up his ordinary Hobbit life to save the world but had to leave Middle Earth entirely
  • Harry sacrificed his life in order to save his friends
  • Frodo gave up the Ring in the end (although not intentionally)
  • Harry destroyed the Elder wand when it belonged to him

DIFFERENCES

Character

HARRY AND FRODO HAVE DIFFERING CHARACTER TRAITS

Character continued

  • Harry is incredibly loyal and less naive then Frodo
  • Frodo is swayed by the power of the Ring and is fooled by Golum
  • Harry is very sacrificial and will easily be a martyr
  • Frodo is somewhat more selfish then Harry

Magic

MAGIC HAS MUCH LESS OF A PRESENCE IN LORD OF THE RINGS

VIOLENCE

THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT LACK OF VIOLENCE IN HARRY POTTER THAT IS PRESENT IN LORD OF THE RINGS

VIOLENCE

  • While there are some deaths in Harry Potter, the violence is lighter
  • Lord of the Rings has lots of violence in order to portray the war aspect.

WHERE IS GOD?

Where is God?

  • There is an established God character: Harry Potter and Gandalf the White
  • Some may argue that there are several Godly characters such as Aragorn and Dumbledore
  • Harry and Gandalf die and resurrect which is clearly an allegory for Jesus' sacrifice
  • The consequences of evil actions are seen immediately and dealt with thoroughly
  • Good prevails. This may seem irrelevant but God does plan on winning the war against evil

Where is God?

  • Both of the movies have heavy undertones involving the beauty of nature
  • Both movies deal with the pros and cons of immortality
  • Both movies have a fellowship that symbolizes the church
