PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Loss of Farm land

Due to the Urbanization Sprawl

So whats the problem?

Currently with the rate of growth for Canadian cities, farmland is rapidly decreasing if you just look out side you can see farm land being removed for housing, shopping centers and more. According to MAH 18% of class one farm land has been lost to urbanization.

List of problems

  • In Ontario we have 52% of Canada's farm land and we are losing it
  • We have an increasing population = we need more food
  • Ontario also has some of the most prime farmland in Canada
  • Urbanization
Point one: We have 52% of Canada`s farm land and 18 % has been loss if we have prime farm land then removing it will decrease Canada's total output.

Point 2: Increasing population, with the increase in population we need more food but the problem is since we need more housing to put these people in farm land is usually replaced for this.

Point 3: Self Explained through #1

Point 4: Ill get to that later (it is the number 1 reason)

Ontario Population Chart

This is a chart showing ontario`s population increase

"consider this we consume 3 million pounds of food a year, and we producing less and less each year (as Ontario as a province).

Urbanization

What is it?
the next part of my presentation is urbanization why ? you may ask because it is the number one reason for farm land loss.

What is Urbanization

the process by which towns and cities are formed and become larger as more and more people begin living and working in central areas - Definition from Webster.com

Urbanization

  • How does it affect farmland?
  • There are rwo major issues with it
Currently there is two issues with urbanization

These are that one cities need to plan better and become more dense in order to slow down expansion of city boarders because when city boarders expand farm land is loss this leads us to the second issue....

The second issue is that with the increase in populations in these urbanized areas, this adds to the need of food and food is produced on farms but due to poor urban planning in Ontario cities are made to keep expanding instead of rebuilding and creating a denser city

For Example

every person in the world can fit inside of the state of Texas if it was as dense as New York city this means if you can fit over 7 billion people in one state that is smaller then Ontario then we should be able to have 13.5 million people in a province without having to remove as many farm lands as we are now.

How do we solve this?

  • There is only one option

RE-urbanization

So what is Re-Urbanization

Re-urbanization is movement of people back into an area that has been previously abandoned. Re-urbanization is usually a government's initiative to counter the problem of inner city decline, pollution, overpopulation, inadequate housing, etc. arise.

Re-Urbanization is actually a really simple process and it doesn't have to be very costly, because many places like Kitchener-Waterloo region have many abandoned factory now this doesn't sound glamorous but it actually can be! (check out this article http://www.globalsiteplans.com/environmental-design/architecture-environmen... )

These places can be made more Eco-friendly to help reduce energy use and create less waste this mean lower co2 emission and that means less weather fluctuation which helps improve crop yield of crops.

Re-Urbanization doesn't just have to be re doing old and abandon buildings to help increase density, it can also be replacing multiply house for apartments and other buildings the can hold more people or even add to stores or business buildings and adding housing to it.

Is there really any other way?
