1 Corinthians 13

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Without Love

13:1-3

Nothing...

Gong or claning cymbal - word used to describe the big metal thing they hit in pagan temple worship - which appears to be quite impressive summoning the attention of the gods.......when in reality there is nothing there but a connection to the demonic or some artists imagination in the form of an idol

and without love I am a nobody, a no one - which is just the opposite of what the person operating outside of God is hoping to achieve - the appearance of accomplishment or importance

Without love - I gain nothing, I have nothing to show for all of my efforts, no reach, no influence, no profit, no advantage

Even though it looks like I can connect with and talk like heavenly beings

Even though I have access to "insider" information - which only "important" people have by the way.....

Even though I build my life on looking like this amazing philanthropist, spending millions in ways that appears to be costing me dearly.....

and have not love......

I have nothing.....

except....

Trash Can

an empty one.....
gong - something hollowed out made of metal or brass, designed to make noise when it is struck.....

tinkling cymbal - a battle cry designed to eleicit fear or intimidation, describing mourners wailing at a funeral,

You can make lots of noise and all you do is leave behind a big mess.......

Love Is...

A word that is used in the New Testament 115 different times....

9 times in these 13 verses we are focusing on today....

Used to describe the yoke that Jesus invites us to put on - His yoke is easy - its a good fit and actually helps.....Matt 11:30

DONE and GONE!!

  • Cease
  • Still
  • Pass away
  • Disappear
  • Put away
  • Have clarity
  • Have big picture
8 Love never fails - will never be pushed aside by some other force or fall over on its own

But where there are prophecies, they will cease - inactive, inoperative, no longer useful

where there are tongues, they will be stilled - to come to an end, be be no longer

where there is knowledge, it will pass away - same word used to describe what happens to prophecy

For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears - again same word as cease or pass away

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me - these things will be placed in a position having no influence or impact....put it behind me - to put an end to an activity....

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face - its darkened -
(Illus. when we had a woodstove sometimes we got some wood that had extra sap, or we ran the stove with little air flow, and the glass would fog up or get all smokey .......so you couldn't see through it clearly....

Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known - I will have the big picture, full picture

Have clarity

Have big picture

which is.......
