LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

DECEMBER 16, 1770? - MARCH 16, 1827

CHILDHOOD

  • Ludwig was the eldest child.
  • His parents were Johann and Maria Magdalena van Beethoven.
  • By the age of 11 Beethoven had to leave school.

FAMILY LIFE

  • Though at first quite prosperous, the Beethoven family became steadily poorer with the death of his grandfather in 1773 and the decline of his father into alcoholism.

LIFE AS A COMPOSER

  • Ludwig was a German composer and pianist.
  • He remains one of the most admired composers in the history of western music.
  • During his time, he began to grow increasingly deaf.
  • His only opera, Fidelio, was first performed in 1805, was revised to its final version in 1814.

HEALTH

  • He described his problems with health and his unfulfilled personal life in two letters, his “Hilligenstad testament” (1802) to his brothers and unsent love to an unknown “Immortal Beloved”(1812).
  • After some months he died of his bedridden illness. He died in 1827.

His work ranks amongst the most performed of classical music repertoire and span the transition from classical period to the Romantic era in classical music.

FACTS

  • During his last 10 years of life he was unable to hear.
  • His music teachers were Joseph Haydn and Mozart.
  • While in the Ninth Symphony he combined the worlds of vocal and instrumental music in a manner never before attempted.

FUN FACTS

  • The earliest recorded piece that Beethoven composed is a set of nine piano variations, composed in 1782.
  • The opening motif to the Fifth Symphony from 1808 is one of the most famous musical excerpts in history.
  • By 1796, he had begun to suffer from tinnitus and was losing his hearing.
