Conflict: Person vs Self
Baby vs Society
Quote:
"I had betrayed them by turning out to be the type of kid that I was turning out to be. I wished that I could stay a cute adorable kid, but I couldn't (O'Neill 167)".

Baby is constantly gaining a bad reputation by her friends and their parents because of the people she hangs out with and her choices. She wanted all of them to still see her as the cute little kid but that time has passed.

Conflict:Person vs Person
Baby vs Alphonse
Quote:
"This isn't Baby's place" Alphonse said disgustingly. "This is my place. she doesn't pay rent here. I do. She's a ******* thieving whore. a whore. you're in way over your head. I'd be afraid to touch her (O'Neill 305)".

This quote means that Alphonse is angry at Baby and she is just useless. He also implies that she has been with lots of guys by saying you should be afraid to touch her and calling her a whore.

Theme Statement:
In the novel, Lullabies for little criminals, Heather O'Neill develops the idea that kids turning into an adult will cling to the past, and mature

"I was just going to have to start being my own person (O'Neill 87)".

This means that Baby is going have to be an adult and grow up to make her own decision. Making your own decision is being mature

"Suddenly I realized that I wanted everything to be as it was when I was younger. When you're young enough, you don’t know that you live in a cheap lousy apartment. A cracked chair is nothing other than a chair (O'Neill 184)".

Baby wanted to hold on to her childhood and wish she still was a kid because she didn't want to know all the terrible things in an adult life.

"I was going to make my own decision about love from now on (O'Neill 140)".

This quote means that Baby was going to have to start making her own path for love and not follow others. This means that she was maturing as an adult.
