WHAT IS A LUNAR ECLIPSE?

  • A lunar eclipse is where the moon passes behind the earths shadow
  • To have a lunar eclipse it has to be a new moon
  • All three sun, moon and earth have to be all lined up

HOW LONG DOES A LUNAR ECLIPSE LAST?

  • A Lunar Eclipse can last up to three or more hours!
  • Only because the moon and earth move slowly past each other

WHEN CAN I SEE A LUNAR ECLIPSE?

  • A lunar eclipse can be seen over a whole hemisphere
  • When there is a full moon ( but not every time )
  • It is also seen as the same time as everyone in sight of a full moon

ARE ALL LUNAR ECLIPSES THE SAME?

  • No, though they all have the same course of a lunar eclipse
  • Each eclipse will have its own characteristics
  • For example they may have a slight difference in colour
  • And the surfaces may seem different

  • Lunar Eclipses can occur up to 3 times a year
  • The maximum time a lunar eclipse can occur is 3 times
  • A Lunar eclipse can only occur during a full moon
  • Lunar eclipses are visible over a whole hemisphere

  • Some Lunar Eclipse may have a slight difference in colour.
  • From the naked eye the moon may look like it has a different surface or texture
