Lusitania

  • built by John Brown and Company of Clydebank
  • she was the most magnificent, largest and the fastest liner ship at that time(liner: large commercial ship carrying passengers)

Rms Lusitania

  • RMS stands for Royal Mail Steamer because she carries crown mail(in U.K., all mail that is posted and not delivered yet belongs to the crown)

But

  • When Lusitania was built, she was also mostly financed by the British government. So they can requisite(-an official order laying claim to the use of property or materials)Lusitania in times of war

So

  • When the World War I occurred, RMS Lusitania and her sister ship RMS Mauretania, and RMS Aquitania were requisitioned for service to the king and the country in August 1914. She didn't get any official war assignments so she continued as a passenger ship

Last Voyage

  • Lusitania left New York on May 1, 1915 heading for Queenstown, Ireland, and was bombed by German U-boat (submarine) U20 on May 7
  • there were 128 American passengers on it

Lusitania was Warned

  • When Lusitania left New York, the dock was crowded with reporters because the New York newspapers had been paid by the German Embassy to deliver a message: any ship that sailed into the "European War Zone" was a target for German submarines. But the passengers didn't listen

After That

  • Germany argued that Lusitania was carrying weapons, when President Woodrow Wilson threatened to cut of diplomatic relationship with Germany, Germany agreed to send warning before bombing a ship to let innocent passengers escape
