PRESENTATION OUTLINE
PURPOSE: MacArthur Middle School is located on a US Army base. The school missed all of it's academic targets last school year. Through this project we hope to identify military families and use positive strength based brief interventions that will increase the military students' academic performance and self-efficacy.
QUESTION: Who in the school is military connected and has a parent currently deployed who has been deployed for more than 19 cumlative months? What types of supports do these students need to increase their academic achivement.
SMART GOAL: Identified students' self-efficacy and academic performance will increase after participating in large group interventions on growth mindset and positive coping strategies.
The school had no way to identify military connected families. Surveys were given to every homeroom class asking the students to self-identify if their parents was in the military and whether they have been or are currently deployed.
Sample of the student survey
The survey have not been 100% returned. At this time 820 of the 1030 students have taken the survey. The sample includes over 230 students in each grade.
39 Students with currently deployed parents have identified. The students will be invited to participate in a brief 1 time intervention on study skills and academic strategies.
Additional data needs to be collected to determine the cumulative length of parental deployment. Parents will be sent a brief survey to collect data on the length of their deployments. Students who fall within the at-risk range will be supported with a large group brief strength based intervention.
OUTCOME DATA: Student's 1st and 2nd semester grades with be compared to assess academic performance.
PERCEPTION DATA: Students will take a pre/post test that rates their belief in their own abilities to succeed in school. Questionnaire will include 5 Likert scaling questions on topics included in the large group interventions.
Outcome data and perception data still need to be collected.
