ARRIVAL OF SPANAIRDS

  • Never before seen instruments emerge
  • First stringed instruments appeared
  • Examples are lute, mandolin, guitar, harp, violin

MAIN INCA INSTRUMENTS

GUITAR

  • Shape similar to Spanish guitar
  • Variation in shape, number of strings, & tune
  • Used to play different styles of Inca music, such as Marinera and Huayno

CHARANGO

  • Shaped like mini guitar
  • 10 strings
  • Made with shell of armadillo & wood
  • Best example of native creativity

CAJON

  • Percussion instrument
  • Wooden box with a hole in the back
  • Commonly played in Marinera & Afro Peruvian music

ZAMPONA (PANPIPES)

  • Made of cain
  • Series of different sized tubes bound together
  • Can be found in many different regions of Peru

QUENA

  • Peruvian flute
  • Has 5-6 holes
  • Many different sizes
  • Made of cain & wood
  • Well known around world today

IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC

WHY WAS MUSIC IMPORTANT?

  • Music was featured at Inca festivals
  • It was also featured at religious ceremonies
  • Most aspects of Inca culture were lost when the Spanish arrived, but music from the times of the Inca still lives on in the Andes, and now has been joined with modern day region music.
