LIPIDS

  • They are fats, oils, waxes and steroids
  • Most are hydrophobic
  • It's made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms
  • Number of carbons will be a multiple of 2
  • Hydroxyl group

Lipid's primary function is to help reserve energy for the body

TYPES OF LIPIDS

  • Oils (Canola, Olive, etc.)
  • Unsaturated Fats
  • Steroids

CARBOHYDRATES

  • They are mainly sugars and starches
  • Composed of hydrogen, carbon & oxygen
  • Carboxyl group

The function of a carbohydrate is to store energy and is used as structural materials

PROTEIN CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

  • Composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
  • Have carboxyl groups, amino group
  • Has a R group which gives the protein its shape

The proteins function is to serve as enzymes, help control reaction rates, build bones and muscles, and help repair the body.

EXAMPLES OF PROTEIN

  • Meats
  • Red blood cells
