MAD COW DISEASE (BY: MARC DUNSEATH)

ALSO KNOWN AS ‘BSE’ (BOVINE SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPATHY)

THE CAUSE

  • Starts with a Prion: a transmissible agent
  • Infected cattle have this agent in their central nervous system tissue (brain & spinal cord)

Symptoms:
Personality changes, seizures, muscle stiffness, dementia, involuntary movements, depression, psychotic episodes

The disease is transmitted by eating the tainted meat.

Cases are most prevalent in the U.K. (78%). Other countries include: U.S., France, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Canada.

REPRODUCTION

M.C.D. IS SPREAD THROUGH PERSON TO PERSON, AND ANIMALS, BY EATING THE INFECTED BEEF OF THE COW.

PREVENTION

PUBLIC HEALTH CONTROL MEASURES LIKE SURVEILLANCE AND CULLING SICK ANIMALS HAVE BEEN INSTITUTED IN MANY COUNTRIES. REMEMBER, M.C.D. ISN’T AIRBORNE; YOU CAN ONLY GET IT THROUGH EATING INFECTED BEEF.

FATALITY

IT STARTS WITH MEMORY PROBLEMS, THEN MUSCLE INCOORDINATION, THEN SPONGE-LIKE HOLES THAT FORM IN THE BRAIN WHICH SHRINKS IT.

DEATH RATE FROM MAD COW

MORTALITY RATE=100%

THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE. THE BEST WAY TO AVOID THIS IS TO BE CAUTIOUS OF WHAT YOU EAT!
