MADAGASCAR IS CONSIDERED PART OF AFRICA

LANGUAGE

  • Malagasy - This language is spoken throughout Madagascar. They also share common words with Indonesian languages
  • French - French is spoken by people who are educated of the former French colony.
  • English - English is spoken by very few people.

GOVERNMENT

Semi Presidential Republic
This is basically a democracy, but there is a president and prime minister. The president has more control, and the prime minister deals with government officials.

DAILY LIFE -CLOTHING

  • Madagascar's attire or clothing varies on where a person lives.
  • Men everywhere wear larger shirts, and some type of pants. Usually this consists of shorts or long pants.
  • The women in the Platue wear dresses and skirts.
  • Coastal Regions: the women wear wrapped skirts with a top. A shawl, called a Lamba is worn on special occasions.

DAILY LIFE-CLOTHING

  • Middle Class: women wear western dresses, blue jeans and pants.
  • To bury ancestors in Madagascar they remove them from the casket and wrap them in a Lamba. Then return them on a special occasions.

TOP SPORTS INCLUDE FOOTBALL, BASKET BALL, TENNIS, AND JUDO.

DAILY LIFE-EXTRAS

  • Transportation - Madagascar's transportation is mainly made up of Taxi-brousse and rental cars.
  • Weather - January is the hottest months with highs of 72 degrees. July is the coldest with highs of 59 degrees.

ECONOMY

  • The Economy is a free market where the government doesn't interfere at all.
  • Agriculture: coffee, vanilla, sugar cane, cloves, cocoa, rice, beans, bananas, peanuts, and livestock products.
  • Industries: meat processing, seafood, soap, leather, sugar, textiles, glassware, cement, paper, tourism, and more.
  • GDP rate 9.991 billion as of 2016

  • The capital is Antananarivo which is the largest city in Madagascar
  • Madagascar is a more developing country.
  • Main imports: capital goods, petroleum, consumer goods and food.
  • Main exports: coffee, vanilla, cloves, and selfish. These come from the country's of France , Germany, Japan, and the United States.
  • Monetary Unit: Malagasy Franc

Art
One of the biggest arts in Madagascar is hand-weaving. This was created 6000 BC in west Asia. This is created by using a loom and string and doing a continuous pattern. Another type of weaving is weaving with silk which the women do to make dresses and Lamba's.

  • Indigenous Religion - 55%
  • Christianity - 40%
  • Muslim - 5%
  • Indigenous religion is the main religion in Madagascar. Indigenous means native, so Indigenous religion is when people follow their ancestors religions.

HISTORY

  • 160 million years ago Madagascar (which was part of India at the time) separated from Africa.
  • 80 million years ago Madagascar separated from India.
  • Aug. 10, 1500-Captain Diogo Dias discovered Madagascar
  • Somewhere between 1810-1828 Radama 1 transcribed Malagasy to a written language
  • Sep. 10, 1942-British troops landed on Madagascar.

HISTORY CONTINUED

  • Jan. 8, 1943 - The British troops handed Madagascar to the free French colony
  • 1947 - Madagascar rebelled against the Colonial Rule. Followed by that was Repression which was where 100,000 Malagasy were killed. This is known as Martyr's Day. Celebrated in 1967.
  • 1960 - Madagascar gained independence from France.

HISTORY CONTINUED

  • 1991 - a man found a large black rock that contained the world largest emerald cluster.
  • Mar. 28, 1998 - a locust swarm covered 24 million acres of land.
  • 2008 - 7 out of 10 lived on 2$ per day and raised to 9 out of 10 by 2014.
  • 2009 - population was 20 million and 70% were living on a 1$ a day.

  • 2012 - Madagascar was one of the poorest countries in the world.
  • Throughout the timeline there were a lot of cyclones that hurt or killed a lot of Malagasy

SOCIAL GROUPS

  • Ethnic Groups: Malayo Indonesian (Merina and related Betsileo) Cotiers (Mixed Africam, Malayo Indonesian, and Arab history -Betsrimisarka, Tisimihety, Antaiska, Sakatoa, French, Indian, Gerole, Comoran.
  • Social Groups: Merina are the more dominant. Other ethnic groups are referred to as Andriana (noble), the hove (commoners), and the Andevo (descendants of slaves)
  • Population: 23,201,926
