FARMERS WELL

  • Animals would not drink because of a bitter taste.
  • It was also noted that the water had medicinal properties in healing wounds.
  • It was later identified to be magnesium sulfate.
  • Epsom, England, 1618.
  • After that epsom salts gained popularity.

  • Joseph black recognized it as an element in 1755
  • First isolated by an English chemist; Sir Humphry Davy, in 1808
  • It is named after a district in Thessaly, Greece. Magnesia
  • Symbol is derived from the word itself.

PROPERTIES OF MAGNESIUM

  • Silvery White, Gray, Shiny
  • Solid
  • Doesn't occur uncombined in nature.
  • Sinks in water but is still relatively light.
  • Lighter than aluminum.

  • Melting point: 650C
  • Boiling point: 1107C
  • Alkaline Earth Metal which attributes to its physical properties.
