History

  • Magnesium was first isolated by Sir Humphry Davy, an English chemist,through the
  • electrolysis of a mixture of magnesium oxide (MgO) and mercuric oxide (HgO) in 1808.
  • Symbol: Mg

Uses

  • Magnesium burns with a brilliant white light
  • used in pyrotechnics
  • used in Photographic flash blubs
  • and in Flares

How name came to be

  • Magnesium got its name from Magnesia
  • a district in the region of Thessaly, Greece.
