Magnet

• Material that attracts iron/iron substance
• One part of magnet will point north when swinging freely.

All magnets have 2 ends called magnetic poles. Magnetism is strongest at poles. The pole that points north is called North Pole, the other South Pole. Like repel, opposites attract.

Magnetic field lines are invisible lines that map out the direction of the magnetic field. Lines spread out from one pole, curve around magnet, return to other pole. Field is strongest at poles where field lines are closest.

Earth is the largest magnet. Protects earth from sun's radiation and asteroids. Important for compass, gps, navigation.
Roatation of earth causes metal cores to spin.
