What is a recommendation report? When are they used?
The purpose of recommendation reports is to understand a problem, research potential solutions, and choose the most appropriate solution to that problem.
report Formatting
- Choose direct vs indirect organization based on audience/purpose
- Choose format: memo, letter, or electronic (ie presentation via Powerpoint)
- Use Word templates for routine reports only (ie monthly finance reports)
- Learn how to organize headings -- p. 275
Introduction OF report
- State purpose of report (WHY)
- Describe HOW you gathered the information
- Direct: state recommendation
Use direct approach when your audience will be receptive to your recommendation.

Overview/Background
Findings (organize options)
Conclusion/Recommendations

Use the indirect approach when the audience is sensitive about the situation. Present several alternative solutions, beginning with the least likely to succeed. The recommendation listed last is the one you think will best solve the problem.
Indirect Approach sample: p. 238-239

See handout that compares organizational strategies for both indirect and direct reports.
In both direct and indirect reports, use the elements of persuasion (logos, ethos, pathos) to showcase why your solution is the best solution.
