STEPS TO MAKING A LAW

BY KENDRA & JACKIE

1ST STEP

  • Bill is established into one chamber of congress

2ND STEP

  • The proposed bill is assigned to a standing committee

3RD STEP

  • Then the standing committee reports the bill back to the floor & whole chamber

4TH STEP

  • Then the bill is placed on a congressional calendar to be scheduled for a debate

5TH STEP

  • Then the chamber considers the bill and debate is held

6TH STEP

  • It then passes the first chamber, which is considered an act

7TH STEP

  • Then the act is sent to a different chamber

8TH STEP

  • Conference committee meets to iron out the differences in the versions of the legislation

9TH STEP

  • Legislation is sent to president for his signature

10TH STEP

  • Congress my override a veto by 2/3 vote of both chambers
