Search Tools

Catalyst: Books and physical materials

Databases: we have hundreds--how do you find the right ones? Use the guide below for your course, or talk to me.

Web: caution that there is good material findable on the open web but it can be harder to distinguish
-don't pay
-wikipedia (lots of bias and missing information!)

How do we search?

Step 1 is moving from a TOPIC to a RESEARCH QUESTION

let your reading and curiosity guide you

Group brainstorm: topic = malaria

Evaluate

  • Authority
  • Relevance
  • Currency
Authority:

publisher (academic press, journal scope)

Relevance:
read beyond the title
abstract
table of contents/index
intro & conclusion

Currency:
this varies by field and by research question

Use

  • Get
  • Read
  • Take notes
  • Check citations
Get:
get the full text and the citation (show how)
...what if? (Find It, Borrow direct, ILL)

Read:
more on that in a second...

Take notes:
ditto

Check citations:
helps you find more relevant sources that you can then find and use
helps to find the 'conversation'
