COMPETITION & AGGRESSION

  • Cows get most competitive when it comes to being fed.
  • Other times, they aren't nice to other cows and human caretakers
  • Because of their living conditions.
  • If a cow doesn't have nice bedding or flooring, it will get aggressive.
  • Also, stress, frustration, and pain play a role. They are kind of like us!

TERRITORY

  • Cows don't mark their territory or protect it.
  • All they do is eat and move on.

ATTRACTING A MATE

  • Bulls show off for the cows in the heat by:
  • Growling, rumbling, rubbing themselves in the grass or dirt, or throw dirt on their backs.
  • If all else fails, they chase the female down.
  • Usually, though, the cows ignore the bull's attempts.

RAISING THEIR YOUNG

  • The cow (not the bull) and their calf have a very special relationship with one another.
  • The cows lick mucus off the calf, as an example.

DO THEY LIVE IN A GROUP?

COMMUNICATION

  • And body positions.

ARE COWS QUICK LEARNERS?

  • It depends on the type of cow.
  • Some are quick others are slow at learning.
  • Research shows that they are very intelligent and have a long term memory.
  • They develop friendships over time and hold grudges on cows who treat them badly.
