1. Mandela's Life during Apartheid
- born 1918 as Rolihlahla in Transkei, South Africa
- in primary school teacher gave him the name Nelson
- studied law, opened a law firm with his friend, Oliver Tambo
AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS (ANC)
- National liberation party, which had fought for Blacks' self-determination
- Mandela joined the ANC 1944
- 1948 National party was elected and began a policy of apartheid
- 1949 ANC adopted a more radical policy (Programme of Action)
- Banned 1960 after "Sharpeville Massacre" (1960)
Self-determination= Selbstbestimmung
- National party's political position: right-wing to far-right
- Programme of Action: Strikes, boycotts and other forms of non-violent resistance

SHARPEVILLE MASSACRE (21 MARCH 1960)
- Anti-pass campaigns were taken up by the ANC
- Police shot into crowd of about 5,000 unarmed anti-protesters
- 69 people were killed, 200 wounded
- Start of armed resistance of Blacks in South Africa
IMPRISONMENT (I)
- First imprisonment 1956: Had organized anti-apartheid strikes
- Acquitted after nine months imprisonment
- Arrested 1962: Incitement & leaving the country without passport
- Sent to Robben Island
- June 1964: Convicted of sabotage, sentenced to life imprisonment
IMPRISONMENT (II)
- Robben Island: Prisoners were placed in small cells and ...
- were obliged to work long hours in limestone quarries
- 1990: Mandela "free man" at the age of 71
TIME AFTER PRISON
- After Mandela' release, black and white leaders began negotiations
- Nobel Peace Prize 1993 was awarded to Mandela and de Klerk
- 10 May 1994: Elected as President of South Africa
