MAO ZEDONG

THE CULT OF PERSONALITY

CHINA IS THE SECOND LARGEST COUNTRY IN ASIA.

CHINESE RULE

FOR MOST OF CHINA'S HISTORY, IT WAS RULED BY DYNASTIC EMPERORS OR TRIBAL CHIEFTAINS.

BY THE EARLY 1900S, THE DYNASTIC RULE LEFT MANY CHINESE FEELING DISENFRACHISED.

BY 1908, THE LAST ADULT EMPRESS DIED.

THE LAST EMPEROR

YOUNG PUYI WAS THE HEIR TO THE THRONE, BUT HE WAS JUST A LITTLE BOY.

THE TIME WAS RIPE:

NATIONALISTS OVERTHREW THE GOVERNMENT AND MADE CHINA A REPUBLIC.

MAO ZEDONG WAS BORN

IN HUNAN PROVINCE IN 1893.

HIS BIRTHPLACE

IS STILL VISITED BY MANY CHINESE AND OTHER TOURISTS.

MAO'S UPBRINGING

WAS NOT EXTRAORDINARY.

HIS PARENTS

WERE PEASANT FARMERS.

MAO ATTENDED SCHOOL

UNTIL HE WAS THIRTEEN.

HE QUIT SCHOOL

AND HELPED HIS FAMILY FARM.

HE WAS NOT CONTENT;

HE LEFT HOME AT 17.

AT AGE EIGHTEEN

MAO JOINED THE REVOLUTIONARY FORCES.

BY THE END OF 1912

CHINA WAS A REPUBLIC.

SUN YAT-SUN

WAS THE LEADER OF THE REVOLUTIONARIES.

THE Kuomintang

WAS HIS PARTY'S NAME.

REVOLUTIONARY CHANGES

EXCITED MAO.

SUN YAT SEN AND THE Kuomintang

WERE THE NEW RULERS OF CHINA.

SUN YAT-SEN

BECAME INTERESTED IN SOVIET COMMUNISM.

MEANWHILE,

MAO WAS BECOMING MORE INVOLVED IN THE POLITICS OF THE GOVERNMENT.

HE ROSE IN THE RANKS

UNTIL HE WAS QUITE HIGH IN THE GOVERNMENTAL HIERARCHY.

MAO ZEDONG

WAS ALSO FASCINATED BY COMMUNISM.

MAO BELIEVED

THAT FOR TRUE COMMUNISM TO SUCCEED, THE MOVEMENT NEEDED TO BEGIN WITH THE FARMERS

SUN YAT-SEN

DIED IN 1926.

CHIANG KAI SHEK

BECAME THE NEW LEADER OF THE Kuomintang.

CHIANG KAI SHEK

WAS NOT INTO COMMUNISM.

CHIANG KAI SHEK

WANTED TO MOVE MORE TOWARD WESTERN DEMOCRACY.

THIS WAS NOT POPULAR

WITH MAO ZEDONG.

CHIANG KAI SHEK

WORKED ON PURGING COMMUNISTS FROM HIS PARTY.

COMMUNIST PARTY MEMBERS

WERE ASSASSINATED OR SENT TO HARD LABOR CAMPS.

MAO ZEDONG

RAISED AN ARMY OF HIS OWN TO DEFEAT CHIANG KAI SHEK.

MAO LOST.

BUT HE WASN'T GIVING UP.

"WE SHALL HEAL OUR WOUNDS,

COLLECT OUR DEAD AND CONTINUE FIGHTING."

HE CREATED A REPUBLIC OF HIS OWN

CALLED THE SOVIET REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

MAO QUICKLY GAINED CONVERTS.

THIS MADE CHIANG KAI SHEK NERVOUS.

CIVIL WAR ERUPTED

BETWEEN CHIANG AND MAO'S FORCES.

BY 1949,

CHIANG WAS DEFEATED.

THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

WAS BORN.

CHIANG AND HIS FORCES

FLED TO THE ISLAND OF TAIWAN.

WHAT IS COMMUNISM?

COMMUNISM IS

A RULING SYSTEM THAT TRIES TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD.

COMMUNISM MEANS

NO ONE IS WEALTHY AND NO ONE IS POOR.

COMMUNISM MEANS

THAT GOVERNMENT OWNS EVERYTHING AND PEOPLE OWN NOTHING.

COMMUNISM MEANS

WEALTH IS REDISTRIBUTED.

"COMMUNISM IS NOT LOVE...

COMMUNISM IS A HAMMER WHICH WE USE TO CRUSH THE ENEMY."

COMMUNISM MEANS

RELIGION IS ABOLISHED.

MAO'S ATTACK ON RELIGION EXTENDED TO TIBET.

TIBET IS A REGION IN EASTERN CHINA.

THE TIBETAN LEADER, THE DALAI LAMA,

WAS FORCED TO FLEE THE POTALA PALACE.

MAO COLLECTIVIZED FARMS

MEANING THAT FARMS WERE COMBINED INTO LARGE SWATHES, WORKED BY SEVERAL FAMILIES.

COLLECTIVE FARMS

WERE OWNED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

THE PEASANTS GREW THE CROPS, AND THE GOVERNMENT

TOOK THEIR SHARE OF THE CROP.

AT FIRST

COLLECTIVE FARMS WERE SUCCESSFUL.

THEN . . .

IN 1958, MAO BEGAN THE GREAT LEAP FORWARD.

THE GREAT LEAP FORWARD

WAS MAO'S ATTEMPT TO MAKE CHINA AS SUCCESSFUL AS WESTERN DEMOCRACIES.

THIS INCLUDED

INCREASING FARM OUTPUT.

DUE TO A COMBINATION OF FACTORS,

YIELDS WERE NOT HIGH ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE FARMERS AND THE GOVERNMENT.

THE GOVERNMENT TOOK THE MAJORITY OF THECROPS,

LEAVING THE PEASANTS WITH VIRTUALLY NOTHING.

MILLIONS OF CHINESE PEOPLE STARVED TO DEATH.

SOURCES VARY

BUT MOST AGREE THAT ABOUT 30,000,000 PEOPLE DIED OF STARVATION.

THE FAMINE LASTED FOR THREE YEARS.

PERSPECTIVE:

ABOUT 80 MILLION PEOPLE DIED IN WORLD WAR II.

MAO TOOK NO PITY ON HIS DYING COMRADES;

SOME ARGUE THAT HE DIDN'T REALIZE THE EXTENT OF THE FAMINE.

OTHER SUGGEST

THAT HIS UNDERLINGS HID THE TRUTH FROM HIM.

AND THAT ON CROSS-COUNTRY TOURS OF CHINA

OFFICIALS CAREFULLY PRESENTED A "HEALTHY" VIEW OF CHINA TO MAO.

MAO'S POPULARITY SAGGED.

BUT IN 1966, HE STARTED THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION.

THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION

WAS A SUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO INFLUENCE PEOPLE'S THOUGHT.

BY 1966, MAO WAS IN HIS SEVENTIES.

EVEN THOUGH AN OLD MAN, MAO COULD STILL SWAY A CROWD.

HE SPOKE TO YOUNG PEOPLE,

TRYING TO CONVINCE THEM OF A PLOT AFOOT.

HE TOLD THEM

THAT ELEMENTS OF HIS PARTY WERE DISSATISFIED.

THEY MIGHT EVEN TRY TO

BRING BACK CAPITALISM.

HIS BOOK OF SAYINGS

WAS DISTRIBUTED TO ALL CHINESE CITIZENS.

YOUNG PEOPLE EVERYWHERE

ADHERED TO HIS IDEOLOGY, LOOKING TO PURIFY THE COMMUNIST PARTY.

SEVERAL VETERAN PARTY MEMBERS

WERE PURGED.

THE PURGES EXTENDED

BEYOND THE PARTY TO THE GENERAL POPULATION.

ANYONE WHO DIDN'T FULLY ADHERE COMMUNIST DOCTRINE

WAS AT RISK.

INTELLECTUALS AND CAPITALISTS

WERE PURGED, MEANING THAT THEY WERE REMOVED TO LABOR CAMPS FOR RE-EDUCATION.

"TO READ TOO MANY BOOKS IS HARMFUL."

EVEN SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED.

TEACHERS WERE PUBLICLY HUMILIATED BY THEIR STUDENTS.

MAO'S CULT OF PERSONALITY

GAINED FULL MOMENTUM DURING THIS STAGE OF HIS LIFE.

"LEARN FROM THE MASSES

AND THEN TEACH THEM."

HE GAINED DIETY STATUS IN CHINA.

DURING THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION

MAO WORKED TO ERASE ALL OF CHINA'S TRADITIONAL CULTURE.

PEOPLE WORSHIPPED HIM.

"POLITICAL POWER

GROWS OUT OF THE BARREL OF A GUN."

"PEOPLE LIKE ME

SOUND LIKE A LOT OF BIG CANNONS."

MAO WAS WORSHIPPED BY THE PEOPLE

ESPECIALLY THE YOUNG COLLEGE-AGED STUDENTS.

RICHARD NIXON

MET WITH MAO ZEDONG IN 1972.

MAO'S HEALTH WAS RAPIDLY FAILING.

NOT MUCH CAME FROM THEIR MEETINGS.

MAO ZEDONG

DIED IN 1976, AT AGE 82.

TODAY, THE MAUSOLEUM IS A MAJOR TOURIST ATTRACTION IN CHINA.

ABOUT 70,000,000 DEATHS.

THAT'S SEVERAL TIMES MORE THAN HITLER'S HOLOCAUST.

HE IS RESPONSIBLE

FOR THE LARGEST GENOCIDE IN HUMAN HISTORY.
