PRESENTATION OUTLINE
What is a map projection?
A map projection is a way of transferring the features of the earth onto a flat surface.
Define the 3 types of map projections.
Cylindrical
A cylindrical projection is a map projection in which the surface features of a globe are depicted as if projected onto a cylinder.
Cylindrical Pros and Cons:
Pro: Accurately shows continent shape
Con: Makes it easier to navigate oceans because distances can be calulated as straight lines.
Conic
A conic projection is a map projection based on the concept of projecting the earth's surface on a conical surface.
Conic Pros and Cons:
Pro: Very little distortion in continent size
Con: Only one hemisphere can be shown.
Equal-area
An equal-area projection is a projection in which regions on the earth's surface that are of equal area are represented as equal.
Equal-Area Pros and Cons:
Pro: Continents are accurately shown
Con: Slight distortion occurs in the edges.
WHO USES THEM?
- Cylindrical: Sailor
- Conic: Meteorologist
- Equal-Area: Explorers
