PRESENTATION OUTLINE
In this lesson you will learn about scale by learning what it does.
Let's review...
All maps should have
A key to unlock the meaning of certain things on the map...
A grid using letters and numbers to identify places on the map
A compass rose to show direction...
But...there is a fourth thing... A scale.
No...not this kind of scale
Is this the actual size of Florida?
The scale is in proportion to the area it represents.
This proportion is 1 to 62,500 or 1 inch to 1 mile (which is about 62,500 inches
Let's take a look at our map:
So if there are almost 4 inches from where Mr. Smith & Mr. Weiman grew up, how many miles would that be?
If Mrs. Felsenthal & my cities are almost 9 inches apart on this map, how many miles is that?
Scales come in different sizes, but if you have a ruler, you can find the distance to anything!
Why do you think scales are important to have on maps?
