Maps can

  • present information about the world
  • show spacial arrangements of locations
  • show size and shapes of countries
  • represent distances between locations
  • help us get around
Maps have many purposes and offer lots of information.

Some maps

are made out of paper.
For many years, we only had maps on paper, or clothes, or maybe a hard surface like a globe or wall map.

Other maps

are on a screen.
Now we access to maps on screens. These maps usually are linked with a GPS system that can tell us exactly where to go audibly, while we watch on the screen visually. If we input our destination, the map will tell us which direction to go and how long it will take.

Maps can help us find people, places, and geographic locations.

Maps help us locate things and travel to places we need to go. If we are lost, a map will assist us in finding our way back.

There are many types of maps with different purposes.

Maps are even used for small places like buildings. Understanding where you are and how to get around is important. They can be helpful if there was an emergency and everyone needed to get out quickly.

Maps can help us understand what is around us,

without being there.
Maps give us a "big picture" of what is surrounding us. They give us secret eyes to the world around us.

All maps give us

helpful information to make decisions.
Maps are a helpful resource. We use them almost every day in some way. They can guide us and save us valuable time. The information we get from maps enables us to make important decisions.

What maps have you seen?

What maps have you seen? Have your parents used maps? Have you seen any maps at the zoo or in the mall?
Be the look-out for maps everywhere!
