MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT

EARLY LIFE

  • Born during the French Revolution
  • He was born on May 20, 1789
  • Attended his first day of school at age 11 but, decided to quit after a day because, the brutal treatment towards the children.

SEMINARY SCHOOL

  • Marcellin decided to study for priesthood.
  • He failed the class and was sent home.
  • He was re admitted through his and his mother's efforts.

MARIST BROTHERS

  • After Marcellin was ordained, he was shocked by the lack of education for people in the rural area.
  • He visited a kid that had no idea about any of the Catholic teachings. Marcellin had taught the kid everything about Catholicism.
  • This personal experience motivated Marcellin to establish the Marist Brothers.

MEMORARE IM THE SNOW

  • Shortly after Marcellin had left from his meeting there was a terrible snow storm.
  • He and another priest prayed the Memorare.
  • Soon after this they saw a lantern in the distance. They were saved by a local farmer, who had been walking to his stable, but had a door connecting his house to the stable.

DEATH

  • He was battling cancer and had passed.
  • Marcellin died on June 6, 1840
  • He was only 51 years of age.

CANNONIZATION

  • He was declared venerable by Pope Benedict XV.
  • He was beatified by Pope Pius XII on May 29, 1955.
  • Marcellin was canonized by Pope John Paul II on April 18, 1999.
