  • Field of science: Radioactivity
  • Youngest of five

Marie Curie

CHILDHOOD

  • Both parents were teachers
  • Mother died when Marie was 11
  • Followed her father in mathematics and physics

EDUCATION

  • Took a break because of cost
  • Worked to get her sister schooling
  • Studied math, physics, and chemistry on her own time
  • Moved to Paris and got into Sobonne
  • Got masters degree in physics in 1893, and degree in mathematics a year later

POLONIUM

SCIENCE CAREER

  • Discovered polonium in 1898
  • Named after Poland
  • Radioactive metal
  • Product of radioactive decay of uranium

RADIUM

SCIENCE CAREER

  • Discovered radium in 1898
  • Rare radioactive metal
  • Alkaline earth series
  • Formerly used as radiation therapy

CHALLENGES/DIFICULTIES

  • People didn't believe there was other elements in uranium
  • Radiation from the elements she worked with got her sick and eventually killed her

  • She opened the door for other female scientist
