It is the year of 1846 and we are pioneers that are going to travel west to California for a better life in covered wagons. The wagons will protect us from many dangers. We currently live in Springfield Illinois and we hope that this trip will be worth it.
We are going to leave Illinois in April 1846. It is a hard life here and there is not much help. We heard so much about the great life in California, but there is also bad news, the trip is gonna be rough.
There are many deserts along the way, but we will need to cross the harsh 40 - mile desert to get to California. We will have to travel 40 miles to get to the next area that will supply water. Sometimes the sun is boiling hot. When it is not hot it is freezing, never in between.
We had heard that there is not much food a long the way. Luckily there are forts. The forts will supply food and goods that we need on the journey. There are three forts. Fort Laramie, Fort Bridger, and Sutters fort.
When we are very close to California, we might have to stay in a cabin due to deep snow. We will build our cabin with ox hide and wood. The ox hide will be our ceiling an the wood will be the walls.
The mountains are rough. When we stay in the cabin close to California we might get snowed in and we might have to stay here until our company can travel again safety. Hopefully when we travel the weather will be a lot nicer.
Grandma is sick. California is a better place for her and everyone else to recover. We also think that in California, there will be more help for what we need.
California is a better and more beautiful place for us. There is great farming land. Grandma could have a longer life. In California, there is a lot nicer weather that we are looking forward to.
Therefore, we hope that this journey will be a great experience for us and our families that we remember for their whole life. We also hope that we will not perish on the journey. California sounds like a great place so please wish us good luck.
