PRESENTATION OUTLINE
GULF OF MEXICO
- Temperature range: 62-82 degrees Fahrenheit
- Annual precipitation: 99-300cm per year
PLANT ADAPTATIONS
- Underwater leaves and stems are flexible to move with ocean currents
- Some plants produce seeds that can float
- Some plants have leaves that float so they can expose themselves to the sun
ANIMAL APAPTATIONS
- Some camouflage to blend into the environment
- Clown fish produce a mucus that protects them from the anemones stings
- Starfish can grow back any organ they lose without bleeding to death or getting an infection
SITES TO SEE
- USS LEXINGTON
- J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge
- Robinson Nature Preserve
THINGS TO DO
- Kayaking
- Canoeing
- Boat tour
Human impact/change in environment
- A offshore drilling rig in the Gulf exploded, causing a sea-floor oil leak
- This hurt the environment by declining in recreation
- The animals had then a unbalanced food chain, many decreased fish and wildlife population
- The oil spill suffocated marsh grasses, enhanced erosion
Astropecten Articulatus

RELATIONSHIPS
- Parasitic(one is harmed other is benefitted) - isopod and fish
- Predation-(one preys on another organism )shark & baby fish
- Commensalism(one is benefitted other is unaffected)clownfish & sea anemones
- Mutualism- (both benefit)boxer crab and anemone
- Competition- (both compete for resources)sponges and coral competing for space
BIODIVERSITY LOSS
- Habitat loss(destruction of habitat)-hurricanes break coral
- Invasive species(new species which introduced to a new community)- Green crabs are on both sides of North America and are predators to many forms of sea life
BIODIVERSITY LOSS CONT.
- Pollution(introduction of a harmful substance in a environment)- oil spills have killed many organisms, causing predators to find another source of food
- Population(certain type of species) a school of clownfish
- Overuse(excessive amount)- tragedy of the commons; overfishing
PRIMARY SUCCESSION
- Gradual growth of a plant life where there was previously no vegetation or soil
- Coral is deposited and begins to grow on the lava flow. The coral is the first to colonize
SECONDARY SUCCESSION
- Populations greatly decrease after initial disruption
- Coral stacks on top of each other
CLIMAX COMMUNITY
- One that has reached the stable stage
PROJECT EMERALD
- Biodome name- Saida
- Orbiting speed- 23 hours 56 minutes 4 secs
- Rotating speed- not needed
- Sustainability- 5 years
Untitled Slide
- Crew complement- 12 people
- Quarters- submarine
- Needs- they eat raw fish and drink the water through a salt water purifier
- Gravity issues- it's water so they just float
- The growing of plants, fungi, protist, and bacteria we will Velcro down or just let is float
- I don't think the organisms will be too affected
