PRESENTATION OUTLINE
He was born in 1835 in Florida, Missouri.
He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri along the Mississippi River.
His father died when he was 11 from pneumonia.
After that he became a printers apprentice. This meant he spent his days setting type for the newspaper.
When he was 18 he became a river boat pilot.
During this time he learned a lot about the Mississippi River.
A handful of Twain's books are written around the Mississippi River.
These books show his personal enjoyment of the river.
In "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" Tom character was based off of Mark Twain's childhood.
His book "The Adventures of Huck Finn" was thought by most to be the first great American novel.
Mark Twain was only his pen name. Samuel Clemens was his birth name.
In 1870 Mark married Olivia Langston in Elmira, New York.
Soon after their wedding they had 3 girls: Susy, Clara, and Jean.
In 1873 Mark and his family moved to Hartford, Connecticut.
From 1880 to 1894 he invested $300,000 into a new type setter. It always broke down and never worked. He lost all of his investments.
In "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" Twain shows many of the social issues of that time in the book.
Throughout the book Twain uses Huck to show the challenges of choosing right from wrong around slavery.
This reflects on himself showing how throughout his life his views changed little by little.
In 1909 Twain said, "I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835 and I plan to go out with it next year.
One day after Halley's Comet came closest to earth in 1910 Mark died of a heart attack.
Twain has stood the test of time as one of America's greatest authors.
