MARS' MYSTERIES

A FAILURE OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Before We Start:
Mars was named after the Roman god of war.

In the late 1800s, there was a scientist named Giovanni Schiaparelli. He used a powerful telescope to observe the surface of the planet Mars.

He observed that there several faint lines that seemed to crisscross the planet Mars.

When he published his observations, he said that the lines could be natural or the works of "aliens".

In the early 1900s, Lowell published the results of his observations.

He noticed that the lines seemed to change from time to time.

Lowell also noticed that there were blue-green splotches on Mars that would also change every so often.

It turns out that the telescopes had poor optics. So the lines and blotches were actually dust on the telescope.

So you see, that following the scientific method does not guarantee that the conclusions drawn, are accurate.
