  • Martin was the only Tejano empesario to settle a colony in Texas
  • His colony was worth $1,000,000
  • Victoria is his modern day colony

HOW DID HE GET TO TEXAS?

  • He moved to San Patricio County Texas from Mexico with his wife and children and established a cattle ranch
  • He had already been declined to set up a colony twice in Texas
  • He originally lived in Mexico but liked Texas much more

WHEN DID HE SETTLE?

HE SETTLED HIS COLONY IN 1824. IT WAS ALL MEXICAN

LEGACY

  • The sword of Martin De Leon was a famous one. When having space problems with Green DeWitt-
  • -Martin de Leon took his sword and readied himself to behead DeWitt, until Austin broke up the feud
  • It was placed in a middle school exhibit in Victoria Texas
  • Martin De Leon's fine crafted bed is held in the public library of Victoria (as shown in the picture)

MISC.

  • He had the first registered cattle brand in Texas
  • His wife was a major help in making the colony

INTERESTING FACTS

  • In 1822, De León was in New Orleans. There he met Carlos Lazo-
  • -on a pirate ship that was in charge by a Frenchman named Ramon La Fou..
  • He placed a bet with the pirate and Martin won.-
  • Part of the bet required the pirate to deliver supplies to Martin's colony in Texas-
  • -This is where most of Martin's supplies came from
