SETTING

  • This story takes place in the state of New Mexico in the winter where it is very cold.
  • The time period in this story is around the 1980s.
  • During this time period many teenagers did not have cell phones to communicate.
  • Because of this there would be no way to alert anyone about their alleged kidnappings.
  • Also because of the harsh cold weather the teenagers did not have a good chance of escaping.

PROTAGONISTS IN THE STORY

  • Glenn is very popular and everyone enjoys him at his school. He is also dating Marianne.
  • Marianne is a popular and a very pretty girl who wants her dad back in her life.
  • Bruce is a nice and dorky guy. He is Glenn's little brother and he looks up to Glenn.
  • Dexter is an insecure teenager who is jealous of Glenn. He thinks all Glenn cares about is himself.
  • Jesse is very shy and nervous. She is also a new student at the school.

ANTAGONISTS IN THE STORY

  • Buck is one of the kidnappers. All he cares about is getting the money from the ransom.
  • Rita, another kidnapper, is Buck's girlfriend who is only in on the kidnapping because of Buck.
  • Juan, the last kidnapper, is a small Hispanic man who will hurt people if he doesn't get what he wants.

MAJOR EXTERNAL CONFLICT

  • Five kids in high school are kidnapped and are put up for ransom.
  • The four families don't own enough money to pay off the ransom.
  • They must figure out a way to get their children back.

INTERNAL CONFLICTS

  • Glenn has crashed his car into a bicycle and drove off because he was afraid of getting in trouble.
  • Marianne is sad that her real dad isn't in her life anymore and all she wants is for him to come back.
  • Dexter really likes Jesse but he overheard her saying she doesn't like him when she really does.
  • Bruce is angry that everyone keeps comparing him to his brother, Glenn.

PLOT AND EXPOSITION

  • Five teens from the same school and neighborhood are kidnapped from their school bus coming home.
  • They are taken far away to somewhere in the high mountains to be held captive until the ransom is paid.
  • While being held captive the group learns more about themselves and things that they didn't know.
  • Glenn decides to plan an escape. While they are escaping they are caught and Dexter is shot.
  • Glenn and Bruce run off into the woods and Buck chases after them in a car.

PLOT (CONTINUED)

  • While Bruce and Glenn are escaping Buck drives his car off a hill and is killed.
  • Bruce decides to return back to where they are being held while Glenn continues.
  • Later Marianne's step dad makes a deal with Juan and decides to pay off the ransom.
  • Marianne's father knows he doesn't have enough money for the kids, but decides to go anyways.
  • Her father goes to meet Juan in a local village below the mountain where they are being held.

PLOT (CONTINUED)

  • Marianne's father brings a pistol with him. He plans to get the kids back by force.
  • When he meets Juan he is driven to where the kids are being held captive.
  • While driving Juan spots Glenn coming down the mountain. Glenn is told to get in the car.
  • When they arrive Rita notices that Buck has not returned and Glenn tells them that he has died.
  • Juan then tells Marianne's father to get the money. Her father then pulls out the gun and fires.

PLOT (FINAL)

  • The shot misses Juan completely but Glenn hits Juan's weapon out of his hand.
  • Glenn grabs the weapon off the ground and forces Rita and Juan to stand down.
  • The teenagers are free from there kidnappers and are able to return home.
