CHOOSING MARTIN LUTHER KING
I chose Martin Luther King because of his massive contributions to the U.S. Civil Rights movement and his commitment to non-violent methods.
Martin Luther King Jr., born Michael King, was born in Atlanta, Georgia on the 15th January 1929.
King was the son of a reverend and so he was active in his church. He was the middle child in his family. He had Irish ancestry through his great grandfather.
From a young age King saw his father's opposition to segregation. He also had other experiences with discrimination such as attending a "black only" school and having to stop playing with his white friends.
After attending University, King became a Civil Rights Activist and achieved many big victories for the Civil Rights movement such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington.
On the 4th of April 1968, King was shot and killed outside of his hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. Riots broke out across the U.S. In response to his death.
Martin Luther King's message still lives on to this day and it has remained peaceful despite calls for non violence to end after King's death.
King is regarded as one of the greatest orators in U.S. History for his many speeches, his most famous being his "I Have A Dream" speech.
Martin Luther King was a great leader as well as being a great orator. He was able to captivate people across the world and get them to listen to his message.
People looked to King for leadership in the times of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and he was able to organise them and rally people of all races to his cause.
