MARY CASSATT
- Never married
- Never had children
- Became a professional artist whose work was known and admired world wide
As a female artist she also opened the eyes of men who's minds were closed to the possibility of potential in women
"NO WOMAN HAS A RIGHT TO DRAW LIKE THAT"
And yet Mary Cassatt had her art shown in the Paris saloon
But that's okay Degas, Mary didn't need a mans approval any way
"I’d rather see you dead first."
In the face of resistance Mary pushed forward and I doing so became an icon for American women.
She made a career out of drawing women, and girls displaying female life as art.
"I am independent! I can live alone and I love to work."
she became active in the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. In 1915, she helped to organize a New York exhibition consisting of works by old masters, her friend Degas, and herself in order to raise funds to support the cause. Five years later, she witnessed the passage of the nineteenth amendment
LEGACY
- Was a pioneer in the movement for suffrage
- Broke social norms and showed women an alternative to domesticity
- Elevated female life to a place of public discussion
AMERICAN ART
- Formed bonds with greats like Degas and Monet that allowed her to negotiate their art into American galleries

- Up to this point America and its art had been separate from the rest of the world
- This brought culture to the people and influenced their life styles
