Early Life

  • She was born on July 10, 1875 in Mayesville, South Carolina.
  • She received a scholarship to Scotia Seminary in Concord, North Carolina.
  • While there, she became a dancer and developed a lasting love of music.
  • She then attended Dwight Moody's Institute for Home and Foreign Missions.
  • She hoped to be a missionary in Africa, but instead planned to teach. 

Major accomplishments

  • She is best known for founding a school in 1904, Bethune -Cookman College.
  • She was one of the first women in the world to serve as college president.
  • She was a member of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Black Cabinet.
  • She became the first black woman to serve as head of a federal agency.
  • She was once hailed as the most influential black woman in the U.S.

later years

  • Mary Mcleod Bethune died on May 18, 1955 of a heart attack.
  • The thing that I admired most about her is how she stood up for all races.
  • She wanted everyone to be equal and have the same rights.
  • She devoted her life to improving lives through education.
  • She made it possible for me to have the rights I do today.
