According to the autopsy report, the cause of death was acute meningitis

Second child, second to die
17 days after Jennifer died, Marybeth ran to hospital with Joseph
Some kind of seizures
Cleared and sent home
Hours later returned to ER- he was dead (tangled in sheets)

Six weeks later, on March 2, 1972 went to ER with Barbera
Went home, hours later back at hospital
Died from brain swelling
