FOUNDERS

  • The English first settled the colony of Maryland in 1634.
  • King Charles I granted the land south of the 40th parallel to George Calvert, Lord Baltimore.
  • The 1st Lord Baltimore died before settling the colony,
  • His son Cecilius Calvert, the 2nd Lord Baltimore, organized the expedition of colonists.
  • His brother Leonard Calvert served as the first Governor of Maryland.

REASONS MARYLAND WAS FOUNDED

  • Maryland received it's charter in 1632 from Charles I of England.
  • It was founded by Lord Baltimore, who had tried to settle in Virginia and was rejected for being a Catholic.
  • It was named for Queen Henrietta Maria of England, Charles' wife.
  • Maryland as a result of its founder had one of the first religious tolerance laws.
  • This influenced the First Amendment of the U.S. constitution.

PEOPLE IN MARYLAND

  • Maryland was meant for catholics and puritans.
  • They allowed freedom of religion.
  • People liked the idea of freedom of religion, over time, more people came.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

  • Maryland is divided into three landform regions.
  • The Appalachian region, the Piedmont Plateau and the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
  • The Chesapeake Bay divides the state.
  • Its bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia.
  • Maryland had hot, humid summers and cool or cold winters

MARYLANDS ECONOMY

  • Maryland traded many things, but the most profitable good was tobacco.
  • With the rise in production of the staple crop, exports to England rose drastically.
  • Despite this growth in tobacco production, problems in price-stability and quality existed.
  • Prices fell so low that the colonists were barely able to survive.
  • Colonial authorities stepped in taking corrective measures by reducing the amount of tobacco produced

RELIGION IN MARYLAND

  • Maryland was mostly Catholic and Puritan.
  • Since they had religious freedom people could practice any religion they wanted.
  • People liked the idea of religious freedom, so more people began to come to maryland.

MARYLAND POLOTICS

  • Free men had the right to vote.
  • There was religious freedom.
  • Marylands government also had the power to print money, create an army, and declare war.
