WHEN?

  • Founded in 1632
  • Charles I of England granted the charter for Maryland to Cecil Calvert
  • The colony was named after a French princess named Henrietta Maria

WHAT WAS THEIR MOTIVATION?

  • Calvert wanted to created a safe heaven for English Catholics
  • demonstrated Catholics and Protestants could live together harmoniously
  • Large land grants
  • Religious toleration

WERE THEY SUCCESSFUL?

  • Lots of plantations
  • Variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, livestock, and tabacco
  • Made a profit

INDIGENOUS POPULATION

  • Declared war in 1642 on the Susquehannock
  • Peace treaty in 1652

GOVERNMENT

  • Lord Baltimore possessed absolute authority
  • The charter created an Arisocracy of lords of manner
  • Maryland general assembly
  • Same function as The House of Commons of England
